When PNG → JPG makes sense
PNG is great for screenshots, logos, and graphics with transparency. For photos, the lossless compression PNG provides isn't usually worth the file size — a 8 MB PNG photo can become a 600 KB JPG with no visible difference. JPG is also the safer pick for upload forms that reject PNG.
A note on transparency
JPG can't store transparency. Any transparent pixels are filled with white. If your image relies on transparency, convert to WebP instead, or compress the PNG without changing format.
Frequently asked questions
Why convert PNG to JPG?
JPG files are typically much smaller than PNG for photographic content. JPG is also accepted everywhere — some upload forms, ID photo systems, and CMS templates only allow JPG.
What happens to PNG transparency?
JPG does not support transparency. Transparent PNG areas are flattened onto a white background by default — you can use the compress tool with WebP if you need to keep transparency.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in your browser via WebAssembly. PNG decoding uses the browser, JPG encoding uses mozjpeg in WASM.
What about quality?
Default JPG quality is 92 — visually indistinguishable from the source. Lower the slider for smaller files.
